Ian qualified in 1971 from Guy's Dental Hospital in London and since that time has practised dentistry in Hampshire, Knightsbridge, London and the Midlands.

He has always been a dental enthusiast and obtained a postgraduate Masters degree in Conservative Dentistry in 1977 whilst a member of staff at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London and has contributed to various books on dentistry. Following a period at the Department of Health, Ian currently teaches undergraduates part-time at Barts and The London Dental School and is a member of the British Dental Association and the British Endodontic Society.

Ian's professional aims are to help patients of Ashwater Dental Practice make the best decisions regarding the health , comfort and appearance of their teeth and gums by offering the most appropriate advice and giving dental care and treatment of the highest standard in a pain-free and relaxed way. His particular dental interests are preventive and restorative dentistry and endodontics (treatment of root canals).

Apart from a short spell in the Midlands Ian has lived in Woking since 1973 and is married to Maggie, a nurse and National Screening Co-ordinator for Marie Curie Cancer Care, with whom he has had two daughters (now grown up). They also have an elderly dog. In his spare time he is interested in a variety of music , improving his acoustic guitar playing and singing (which his family believe to be something of a lost cause) and D.I.Y.
