Helping the Olympic Initiative

Dentsply (a Dental Materials co.) in conjunction with volunteer dentists (that’s us) in the UK are offering British Olympic Association Passport holders one free dental check up per annum.  This is to help ensure our team are dentally fit for the challenge.  This is Ashwater Dental Practices way of helping our athletes.  We have already treated our first sportsperson on the British team and issued them with a Certificate of Oral Health.

National Smile Month 2007 May 13-June 12

It is that time of year again, and as usual we are supporting the British Dental Health Foundation Smile Month.  The theme this year is, “Two Minutes Twice a Day”, we think they are referring to tooth brushing!  Come and see our smile month display in June or enter the design a sticker competition (if you’re under 12).

New Guidance on Single Use Endodontic Instruments

All dentists in the UK have been written to by the Chief Dental officier of England with advice on the re-use of endodontic instruments and vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease).  All Endodontic files/reamers (hand and rotary) must be treated as single use and no longer auotclaved.  It has been suggested that the risk is theoretical and there are no known (or suspected) case’s of vCJD transmission arising from dental procedures.  We have to follow the guidelines and will be covering the cost of the hand instruments but if you have root canal treatment and require rotary instruments there will be a supplement of £25 to pay (they are your instruments then!)

Oval Callout: We’ve been painted, don’t we look smart

How Do You Keep Your Breath Fresh?

Experimental research on the subject of bad breath dates back more than 60 years.  However, bad breath has been recorded in literature for thousands of years.  It was discussed at length in the Jewish Talmud and has also been written about by the ancient Greeks and the Romans. Islam stresses fresh breath and good oral hygiene.  Apparently a congregant was thrown out of the mosque by the prophet Mohammed, for having breath that smelt of garlic (obviously had been to some of the Wokingham restaurants).

Ancient remedies:

  • The Bible-mastic, derived from tree resin.
  • Italy-parsley
  • Iraq-cloves
  • Thailand-guava peel
  • China-eggshells

We thought you may prefer to try some of the mouthwashes we sell at Ashwater.  For more information see our Dental Advice sheet on the web.
