Many people want their fillings to be natural looking and blend in
with their own teeth to keep their smile white. A white filling may
be the answer, especially at the front of the mouth. They are made
of a synthetic resin and “set” as soon as they are placed in a
tooth, with the use of a blue light.
The white filling material has to be placed in a tooth in a different way to the silver fillings and will take longer, but the results are very pleasing as the filling is colour matched to the tooth. A filling also has to be functional so if a white filling is not appropriate in your mouth, alternatives can be suggested such as a crown/ inlay or amalgam. Large fillings at the back of the mouth, which are difficult to access, are not usually suitable for white fillings. • The life expectancy of a white filling will depend on how large the filling is, how heavy the patient’s bite is and how well the patient looks after it. Generally they are not thought to last as long as amalgam. • It is usually best to change the filling only when there is a clinical reason to do so, but if you are very upset about the appearance of your current fillings, please talk to your dentist. • We always use white fillings in children’s teeth. Prices are based on our hourly rate - £86 / 30 minutes Recently, when all the scientific information on amalgam was reviewed, it was felt that the use of dental amalgam is free from risk of systematic toxicity. We still use amalgam at the practice as it is a very effective filling material, especially if the filling is large or at the back of the mouth and it is difficult to keep the tooth dry
