A thin layer of porcelain is made by the laboratory to fit over the front surface of a tooth (just like a false fingernail fits over a nail) – this is called a veneer. A veneer can be used to improve the colour, shape and position of teeth. So if you have gaps between your teeth, veneers would be one way of making the teeth wider and closing the spaces. You may not like the colour of your teeth so a veneer would ensure the discoloured tooth blended in with its neighbours. Two visits are needed at the practice to make a veneer; on the first visit the tooth is prepared and an impression of this is sent to the laboratory including details about the shape, size and colour of the veneer. On the second visit the veneer is bonded to the tooth with a special adhesive (just like a glue). Very little tooth is removed during the preparation; a temporary veneer is not always needed, but the process is not reversible. After the veneer is fitted, it is polished and some minor adjustments may be made. We will then advise you on how to look after it. If the dentist does not feel a veneer is the best cosmetic option for you, they will discuss other ideas with you. (See Tooth Whitening and Crowns). So, prior to any dentistry, a consultation will be needed where a plan can be put together and x-rays taken if necessary. Prices start from… £350 per veneer
