Orthodontic treatment straightens and aligns teeth by means of
“braces”. Teeth respond to constant pressures applied by the brace.
TypesThere are two types of braces: • Removable appliances – plastic, plate type of appliance that can be removed for cleaning. They are suitable for simple tooth movements. • Fixed appliances – fixed braces which consist of brackets that are glued to the front of the teeth and a wire links the brackets. They are used for very accurate tooth movements. Orthodontic treatment can achieve a nice even smile. Straight teeth look great but they also make cleaning easier and chewing more efficient, and teeth that “bite” correctly are less likely to cause jaw joint problems in later life. Most orthodontic treatment begins when all the permanent teeth are through (11–13 years). Earlier treatment may be indicated, especially is it is used to modify facial growth to improve the profile of the face. Adult orthodontics is possible but the treatment may take longer. It may be used prior to some cosmetic treatment. When a child has a consultation at Ashwater, we are constantly reviewing the teeth as to whether they need orthodontics. We use several specialist centres in the area for orthodontics (NHS and private). The orthodontist will discuss the treatment options and how long it is likely to take. Sometimes teeth have to be removed to make space to align the remaining teeth. If teeth have to be removed, we will do that at Ashwater. Orthodontics is only suitable for people who look after their teeth well; good brushing techniques, a healthy diet and motivated about the treatment. Without 100% co-operation from the patient, a great result from the braces is difficult to achieve. If you would like an orthodontic consultation, just ask your dentist.
