A mouthguard is a custom-made soft, plastic cover that fits over your teeth, cushioning them and protecting them from damage during sports such as hockey, rugby, cricket, football. If made by your dentist they fit properly, are comfortable and so properly protect your mouth. The mouthguard is made by taking an accurate impression of your mouth. This is then sent to the laboratory so that the technician can make a mouthguard to fit your own teeth. They are available in all colours and your name is also put inside the mouthguard so you can’t lose it! The cheaper home kits available from sports shops fit badly so they tend to be uncomfortable and can often fall out, causing choking. They do NOT give you the protection you need because of the poor fit. Not only do professionally made mouthguards protect your teeth and gums, they also prevent damage to the jaw, neck and even the brain – they also help to prevent the concussion and damage caused by a heavy blow. They are a small price to pay to protect against damaged teeth and broken jaws. Cost: from £75 depending on colour(s) wanted. Ask your dentist about a mouthguard before the next match. This type of soft cover can also be used to help people who clench and grind their teeth. If you wake up in the morning with a stiff jaw, experience tenderness when you bite together, or continually suffer with broken teeth, you might be helped by wearing a soft night guard. Talk to your dentist if you think you may have jaw problems.
