fluoride

Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in water. The amount of fluoride in the water varies from one area to another. In this area it is less than 1 part in a million, which is the level that has been shown to be the most effective.

If you are very prone to dental decay, your dentist may suggest using fluoride supplements, e.g. rinses or varnishes, to help reduce dental decay. Extra fluoride, (that is, in addition to the fluoride in your toothpaste) should only be taken on the advice and instruction of your dentist.

Fluoride can greatly help dental health by strengthening the tooth enamel and making it more resistant to decay. Most people get their fluoride from toothpaste and we recommend that you use a fluoride toothpaste.

If too much fluoride is taken, enamel fluorosis can occur. This is when too much fluoride is absorbed into the enamel of the developing tooth. The tooth is stronger but can look mottled or pitted and discoloured. So don’t let your children “eat” the toothpaste.

Fluoride is SAFE and the scientific conclusion is that fluoride is very beneficial to dental health and the claims that fluoride can cause all sorts of illnesses has not been sufficiently proven.
