fissure sealants

Fissure sealant is a tough plastic coating that is painted on the “chewing” or biting surface of the back/molar teeth. Fissures are the small cracks and crevices that extend right down into the back teeth. They are too narrow for the toothbrush filaments to get into to clean. The sealant forms a protective coating on the tooth surface and prevents any food or bacteria getting in and attacking the tooth from the inside. It also makes the tooth surface smooth so easier to brush.

The teeth to be sealed are prepared by the dentist (cleaned and etched). The sealant is painted onto the tooth and a light is used to set it. It is possible to seal all first molars (four teeth) in just 30 minutes.

The tooth can be sealed as soon as it has erupted (first molars at 6 years of age, second molars at 11 years of age). The sealant will only stick to dry teeth so the patient has to be able to lie still! It will last for years, but occasionally it has to be repaired. This will be monitored at the check-up.

Fissure sealing is not the only thing that can be done to protect children’s teeth from needing fillings. It is essential for children to brush their teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cut down on the number of times sweet foods and drinks are taken each day and have regular check-ups.

Ask your dentist about sealing your children’s teeth.

Cost: £15 per tooth
