Having a tooth removed

Have something to eat before the appointment.

We only use a local anaesthetic when removing a tooth.

After the treatment avoid strenuous exercise, excess alcohol, hard or spicy food as these may cause bleeding or soreness.

When the numbness wears off, the area may be sore and this can be relieved by taking a  painkiller that you normally use. Please ask the dentist if you would like a painkiller.

After meals keep the area clean by bathing it with plain hot water. This can be carried out until the initial healing phase is complete (approx 4 days).

If bleeding occurs later, place a clean folded handkerchief on the bleeding site and bite down firmly for 10 minutes. You should get a blood clot forming at the extraction site.

If the area starts to bleed again, is very painful or you are worried, please contact the practice on 0118 979 1000. The answer phone is monitored at all times.
