Crowns

A crown (also known as a cap) is an artificial cover which fits over a tooth to improve the appearance of the natural tooth and improve its function.

The crown may be made of porcelain (tooth coloured and very life like), porcelain bonded to a precious metal or gold and it is fitted over your existing tooth. Your dentist will discuss the design with you before treatment commences so you are happy with how the crown will look and function.

A crown may provide a way of improving the appearance of a tooth by changing the colour and/or shape of your natural tooth.

You may need a crown if a tooth is too badly decayed just for a filling. You will usually need two appointments:

Appointment 1

  • Tooth is prepared (having discussed the design)

  • Impressions are taken to send to the laboratory

  • Temporary crown is fitted

Appointment 2

  • This usually takes place after two weeks

  • Temporary crown is removed

  • Permanent crown is fitted with a cement

Care of your crown

It functions like your other teeth and feels like them. Good tooth brushing is essential to avoid decay or gum disease.

  • Ideally floss once a day.

  • Have regular check - ups.

Prices start from £475.
