A consultation at Ashwater is NOT a 5-minute whiz round the teeth. It is a thorough examination of the mouth. We allow 30 minutes of clinical time for this appointment.

• A thorough medical history is taken as we treat the whole person, not just the mouth.

• As a new patient, we take a brief “previous” dental history. This would include any anxieties you have about your dental visit.

• Soft tissues of the mouth are examined – tongue, cheeks, palate. (See section iii on mouth cancer screening.)

• The teeth are checked and we record your existing fillings and crowns. We often use x-rays to help us assess any decay between the teeth. (See section vii on x-rays.)

• The gums are examined and assessed for any areas of inflammation that could lead to “wobbly” teeth. (See section i on scale and polish). We can also plan any advice on flossing and brushing techniques.

• We also allow time for you to talk to us about what you want for your mouth and whether you are unhappy about your smile in any way. We offer a wide range of cosmetic treatment.

After your first course of treatment, we will advise you on how often you should visit Ashwater for the health of your mouth.
