Your teeth in pregnancy

Congratulations on the imminent arrival!

Remember to visit your dentist regularly while you are pregnant, as it is important to avoid infections in your teeth and gums.

We will keep treatment to a minimum and ensure that you are comfortable during appointments - you may prefer not to lie flat.

We offer white fillings so that you do not have to have amalgam fillings during your pregnancy.

Changes in the body's hormones during pregnancy can make your gums more likely to bleed as they are more susceptible to plaque. This is called "pregnancy gingivitis".

To maintain a healthy mouth, the following steps are recommended:

  • Clean teeth very thoroughly twice a day to remove all plaque

  • Avoid times of the day when you are feeling sick

  • Use a fluoride toothpaste

  • Try to eat sweet foods at meal times only - try not to snack too often between meals. If you need to snack between meals try sugar-free snacks, e.g. cheese sandwich, banana, low fat crisps.
